In the Australian context, discussions on sustainability and climate change focus on coal and electricity generation.  This conference proposes to fill the gap of broadening the discussion of climate change and sustainability to other industries, in this case the education and service based industries.  Climate change and sustainability affects us all, no matter the location of our workplace or industry.  By focussing on education and service industries, members, delegates and officials can come together to discuss and find ways of working through issues of how our industries can be more sustainable and reduce our impact on the environment, in our workplace, in our community and in our industry.  Union members will give talks and hold workshops on projects they are currently undertaking in their workplaces.

The conference will discuss issues pertinent to the unions involved:

  • protecting our workplace rights and protecting the planet;
  • challenges facing the education and service industries in implementing sustainability;
  • green offices/schools: minimising waste at the source, recycle and reuse programs
  • just transitions;
  • education and training for a greener future.

Don’t miss this opportunity to network with other unionists working out ways how best to contribute to the debate and to contribute to climate change action at work.

A full program will be publicised shortly.

CLIMATE ACTIVE: Education and Service Industry Union Members Respond to Climate Change

A conference for union members to take action on climate change

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Tim Noonan from the ITUC

Climate change is core business for unions. The education and service sector unions must organise for just transitions to a sustainable future. We need to look at the power of these industries and work locally to shift that power towards sustainability. This conference will look at how workers can create that change in their industries.

The NTEU, in conjunction with the NSW Teachers’ Federation and the LHMU, are organising a one day conference on Saturday 18 September at the Teachers’ Federation in Mary Street, Surry Hills.

Union members will give talks and hold workshops on projects they are currently undertaking in their workplaces. A full program will be publicised shortly.
